Huillcacoto y el gran diluvio andino

In the Waruchiri manuscript, a 16th century Quechua text, we find the story of the great Andean flood. In ancient times, the world was on the verge of disappearing. The only human who survived was a shepherd who cared for a llama. This llama grew sad and one day spoke to the shepherd, “An old llama told me about something that is going to happen. For five days, it is going to rain so much that the sea will rise until it floods the whole land. All the creatures will drown.” The shepherd was frightened, but soon the llama gave him a solution. “The old llama told me that we should go to the top of Huillcacoto Mountain and bring water and food for five days.” So they did and when they reached the top of the hill, they found all the animals gathered together: condors, llamas, vicuñas, owls, guanacos. The water level rose higher and higher and there was less and less room for the shepherd, his llama and the rest of the animals. But eventually the rain stopped and they survived, saved by the Huillcacoto mountain.
