This work is inspired by the Sarmiento de Gamboa lake in the Antarctic region of Chile. It’s the largest lake within Torres del Paine National Park. Despite this lake being named after a Spanish colonizer, these landscapes sustain the memories of its millenary inhabitants. The Aonikenk people conceive the Paine rock mass as a fearsome mountain range because it’s where Agchen resides. Agchen is a fire deity of frightening appearance which provokes fires, thunder and ash eruptions of active volcanoes. Agchen dwells in mountain peaks, lakes or glaciers and causes bad weather or ice calving when human incursions upset him.
