The Puracé is one of the most active volcanoes in Colombia. It is located in the volcanic arc of the Northern Andes. The Kokonuko people tell that in the beginning of time, the Puracé volcano and the Sotará snowcapped mountain communicated through fireballs to maintain their balance. There came a moment when the Puracé and Sotará erupted so strongly that the ice covering them melted and descended as water in a huge avalanche inside which a serpent hid. This serpent gave life to the Kokonuko people, the three worlds in their worldview and all the forms of life within them.
