In Latin America, gold carries the memory of colonial pillage and its sequels. I use burlap as a base for some of my pieces because it is a resistant fabric labourers have used for centuries to carry heavy loads. Over its surface, I apply a layer of acrylic which seals it. I then collage golden and copper metallic leaf cuttings onto it. This paper, which I link to the mineral richness of the earth, joins the burlap and reveals what the two materials have in common: memory and resistance. At last, I print engravings, leaving imprints on the work. The copper branches float like suspended echoes of history. Thy float because they’ve been ripped away and despite that, they insist on remaining; because even what’s plundered leaves a trace.
