A chagra is a space of life where the peoples of the Amazon grow food crops, fruits and medicinal plants. They coexist alongside deep teachings on how people should share the same space: just as all of these plants do in the chagra. Women are the ones who maintain the chagra and transmit their ancient knowledge in doing so. For the people of the Amazon, the chagra is a living being, a mother that sustains the community and should be taken care of. To start one, the communities cut down a section of the forest and when the chagra’s cycle is done, they let it rest to regenerate and open up space in another section of the forest to grow the next chagra.
